Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) is made from pure cotton. After its trituration, it is alkalinized with a solution of sodium hydroxide, to which chloromethyl and propylene oxide are added for etherification, thus obtaining pure HPMC. After neutralization (pH adjustment), pressure filtration, drying, grinding and sieving, a pure HPMC product with a certain degree of purity is finally obtained.
